Position: Treasurer (Trustee)
Location: Remote, based in Scotland
Hours: ~2–3 hours per month (slightly more at year-end)

About The BIT Collective
The mission of The BIT Collective is to catalyse progressive and intersectional structural change in the Scottish folk and traditional music community. We support, platform and advocate for projects by women, non-binary, and trans musicians, and their allies.
Focusing on the folk and traditional music scene in Scotland, the organisation will:
Research equity and inequality issues
Discuss inequality issues
Facilitate learning for the public, organisations and individuals about inequality issues
Address equity and equality issues through the media
Inspire progressive action towards intersectional gender equality
Our vision is to increase the recognition, achievement, safety and enjoyment of an ever more diverse set of people in the Scottish folk and traditional music scene.
Role Overview
As Treasurer (and trustee), you will provide financial leadership and governance as The BIT Collective becomes a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO). You will oversee financial systems and reporting, advise the board on sustainability and risk, and ensure we meet charity accounting and regulatory requirements. This is a voluntary role; reasonable travel and expenses will be reimbursed.
Responsibilities
Maintain oversight of bookkeeping, banking, and internal financial controls
Lead annual budgeting and cash-flow planning; monitor performance against budget
Prepare and present clear financial reports for quarterly board meetings
Ensure timely preparation of annual accounts (as required)
Oversee statutory/SCIO compliance and submissions
Advise on risk management and longer-term financial strategy
Work collaboratively with the Chair, Secretary and Freelance contractors
Key Commitments
Attend at least 75% of board meetings annually (held remotely or in person)
Devote approximately 2–3 hours per month, with additional time at budgeting and year-end
Be available for finance sub-committee check-ins as needed (remote)
What We’re Looking For
We are particularly keen to hear from individuals with experience in:
Accounting, bookkeeping and/or charity finance
Budgeting, cash-flow and management reporting
Charity compliance and governance (ideally OSCR/SCIO)
Financial systems and process improvement
Essential Attributes
Commitment to The BIT Collective’s mission and values
Understanding of (or willingness to learn) charity trustee duties and ethical responsibilities
Strong attention to detail, integrity and confidentiality
Clear communicator able to explain finances accessibly to non-specialists
Collaborative, solutions-focused approach
Desirable Skills
Knowledge of the Scottish traditional music sector
Experience in preparing charity SORP-compliant accounts and working with independent examiners
Familiarity with digital accounting tools (e.g. Xero/QuickBooks) and simple grant budgets

Eligibility
Trustees must be 16+ and eligible to serve under Scottish charity law (OSCR). You should not be disqualified from acting as a charity trustee.

As a trustee, you will have the opportunity to provide strategic oversight, ensure good governance, and act as a champion for The BIT Collective’s mission. Trustees work collaboratively to guide the organisation's vision, monitor its progress, and uphold its core values.
This is a voluntary role; however, reasonable travel and expenses will be reimbursed.
Responsibilities
Contribute to the strategic leadership and governance of The BIT Collective.
Ensure the organisation operates within its constitution, legal framework, and regulatory obligations.
Safeguard the organisation’s values, mission, and reputation.
Provide oversight of financial sustainability, approving budgets, and monitoring expenditure.
Support and guide the Freelance Coordinator and other contractors, offering mentorship and advocacy.
Attend quarterly board meetings, annual strategy sessions, and occasional project-related events.
Promote equality, inclusion, and best practices in the traditional arts sector.
Key Commitments

Devote approximately 1–2 hours per month to board responsibilities, with occasional additional time during strategic planning or major events.
Actively participate in sub-committees or working groups where needed.

Financial management, fundraising, or strategic planning.
Arts and culture, especially traditional music or folk arts.
