BEYOND TRADITION: INNOVATION AND PROGRESSION IN SCOTTISH TRADITIONAL AND FOLK MUSIC
WITH: Ankna Arockiam, Laura Jane Wilkie and Martin Green and Catriona Hawksworth
Tuesday, 27th January 2026
The Box Hub, 50 Washington Street, Glasgow, G3 8AZ
Doors open: 5:00pm
Event Starts: 5:30pm
The BIT Collective presents a thought-provoking panel discussion hosted by Catriona Hawksworth with Ankna Arockiam, Laura Jane Wilkie and Martin Green.
The panel will explore innovation and progression in the Scottish folk and traditional music scene, discussing themes such as intersectionality, accessibility and the representation of diverse identities. The panellists will consider how inclusion can be meaningfully promoted whilst preserving cultural heritage and supporting the scene’s evolution, offering practical insights for musicians, audience members, promoters and venues.
The event will conclude with a captivating storytelling performance by Ailsa Dixon. Her new solo work Cassandra reimagines myth and prophecy through a contemporary Scottish lens, weaving traditional forms with bold, progressive themes. Ailsa’s personal story melts into ancient voices as she explores themes of climate activism, sexual assault, feminism, autonomy and mental health. The result pushes Scottish folk and trad beyond inherited boundaries, creating a visceral, innovative and profoundly intimate performance experience.
The BIT Collective hosts a community meet-up on the second Thursday of every month, usually at Mono in Glasgow.
The meeting is a very casual social gathering where people can chat to others (including representatives of The BIT Collective board and team), make new contacts and have informal discussions about progression in the Scottish folk and trad scene.
The BIT team usually go for a tune together after the meet-up so feel free to bring your instrument along!
Everyone is welcome.
We’d love to see you there!
